The project progress summarizes the current completion degree of a project in a single key figure and thus forms a central basis for control, forecasts, and reporting. It results from the weighted progress of all relevant activities and enables both a snapshot of the current status and a retrospective analysis of the project's progress over time.
In addition to the detailed progress overview under Schedule -> "Progress", there are two options for visualizing project progress as a report.
Single value > Project progress
Progress curve
Weight
Indicates the percentage influence (weight) of the activity (component) on the overall progress. The weight of an activity is calculated based on its duration in working days relative to the total duration of all activities in a project. First, the durations of all individual activities of a project in working days are summed up. This total sum corresponds to 100% of the project scope. Activities marked as non-critical have no influence on the completion degree and therefore also have no weight.
Calculation of a single activity (or summary task)
For a single activity or also for a summary task that represents only a part of the project, the weight is calculated as follows:
Working days of the activity ÷ Sum of all working days of the project
Example
A medium-sized project has a total duration of 1,000 working days = 100%.
Duration of the activity: 15 working days (WD)
Calculation: 15 WD / 1,000 WD = 1.5%
With the completion of this activity, 1.5 percentage points of progress are credited to the overall project.
Cost-based weighting
If costs are stored for individual activities or summary tasks, the weighting of a component can alternatively be based on the planned costs. The higher the cost share of an activity in the total project costs, the higher its weighting and thus its influence on the overall progress.
The determination of progress is carried out analogously to the calculation described above; the completion value is derived based on the progress.
Via the project progress report, an Earned Value Analysis can also be created.
How is progress determined for active activities?
Actual captured by oculai (standard)
Progress = Active working days (WD with at least one activity) / planned duration in WD
If the number of active working days is greater than the planned duration, a flat value of 95% completion is assumed (= shortly before completion).
Actual captured manually
Progress = Working days since activity start / planned duration in WD
If the number of working days since activity start is greater than the planned duration, a flat value of 95% completion is assumed (= shortly before completion).
Progress at date
For the calculation of the progress curve and for traceability of project progress at a specific point in the past, it is possible to display the progress at a freely selectable date X. For this calculation, the so-called "today line" is conceptually set to the selected date. All activities whose start date is after this date and which were therefore not yet active at that point receive a progress value of 0%.
For all activities that were already active at that point, the progress is determined analogously to the procedure described above for calculating active activities.
Can I restrict the progress to a sub-section of the project?
Both in the progress reports and on the progress page, it is possible to limit the calculation to a sub-section of the project (e.g. a building) using the location filter.
